What is Scrip?
Scrip is store gift certificates that can be spent
the same as cash with that particular merchant.
Why does Niles UCC have a Scrip Program?
Niles Congregational Church has had its Scrip Program
for five years to support the children and youth with scholarships
to attend church camp. For the 2000 camping season, the program
helped 28 children to attend camp.
Each time you use scrip, a percentage of the face
value goes to the program. The percentage varies depending on the
merchant and can range between 2% and 20% (for some restaurants).
How do you use Scrip?
Traditionally, scrip has been paper certificates that
are redeemed at the stores, although now some companies, like phone
companies or gas companies (such as Arco), are providing debit cards.
The latest thing in scrip is electronic transactions!
Niles Congregational Church has registered with escrip.com for the latest
in easy transactions. escrip.com has several
companies participating now, and is adding more merchants all the
time.
Safeway is the largest company to use escrip.com's service. It's
so easy now that registered individuals only need to use their
Safeway Rewards Card, and pay in any manner, and Niles
Congregational Church will be credited for the percentage of the
purchase.
Other participating companies include Chevron, Eddie Bauer, Spiegel,
Sharper Image, Round Table Pizza, and American Airlines. Check escrip.com's website often
for new additions to their list.

Scrip Program Gives $2400 for Summer 2006
The Niles UCC Scrip program gave scholarships totaling $2400 to campers ranging in age from starting third grade to high school seniors for the 2006 camping season. There are a total of 14 campers attending either Camp Cazadero or Camp Tamarak.
The funds have been raised by selling gift certificates or gift cards after worship, selling Beneficio coffee, or having contributors register their grocery store savings cards (Safeway, Albertsons, and Raleys) for transparent contributions to the program. The response to the Scrip table after church has been steady, and out-of-state visitors are happy to shop there also.
Due to the insolvency of ScripAdvantage, the primary supplier, in 2005 the program lost over $500 in scholarship money. It has been rebounding by establishing a relationship with the Great Lakes Scrip Center. The 2006 - 2007 year should provide more funds for scholarships through the Great Lakes Scrip Center.

Every Little Bit Helps
Remember to use your Safeway Club Card that you have registered
with E-scrip, and/or your Albertson's Community Partners card when
grocery shopping. Even the little shopping trips help the kids.
